What flag do I need on my number plate for travelling abroad?

With overseas travel becoming increasingly popular again, many drivers are asking what their number plate needs to display before driving abroad. Rules changed in recent years and many motorists are still unsure whether they need a UK sticker, a UK identifier, or an updated number plate.

At Quick Plates, we have put together this guide to help answer the most common questions and make sure you are ready before setting off on your journey.

What does my number plate need to show when travelling abroad?

If your number plate already includes a UK identifier with the Union flag on the left-hand side, you do not normally need to display a separate UK sticker.

However, you will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate contains any of the following:

  • GB identifier with the Union flag
  • European Union symbol
  • National flags of England, Scotland or Wales
  • Standard number plates with no flag or identifier

If you are driving in Spain, Cyprus, or Malta, you must display a UK sticker regardless of what appears on your number plate.

You do not require a UK sticker when driving in the Republic of Ireland.

Are GB number plates with the Union flag accepted?

The older GB identifier is no longer recognised for overseas travel on its own. If your number plate still displays a GB identifier, you do not need to replace it, but you should also display the newer UK identifier or use a separate UK sticker where required.

The same applies to plates displaying EU symbols or national flags for England, Scotland or Wales.

Are there any exceptions?

Yes. Rules can vary slightly depending on the country you are visiting.

For example:

  • Republic of Ireland: No UK sticker required.
  • Spain, Cyprus and Malta: A UK sticker is required regardless of your plate design.

Can I be fined if I do not display the correct identifier?

Yes. Failing to display the required identifier or UK sticker when driving overseas could result in fines or issues with local authorities.

Specific penalties vary between countries, so it is always advisable to check local driving requirements before travelling.

Can I still display national flags on my number plate?

Yes. UK regulations still allow certain flags and identifiers to appear on the left-hand side of a legal number plate.

Approved flags include:

  • Union Flag (Union Jack)
  • Cross of St George
  • Cross of St Andrew (Saltire)
  • Red Dragon of Wales

Approved identifiers include:

  • UNITED KINGDOM, United Kingdom or UK
  • GREAT BRITAIN, Great Britain or GB
  • CYMRU, Cymru, CYM or Cym
  • ENGLAND, England, ENG or Eng
  • SCOTLAND, Scotland, SCO or Sco
  • WALES or Wales

The flag must appear above the identifier and cannot be placed within the plate margin or exceed the permitted dimensions.
